Description
|
Environmentally responsible, ecosupportive administration appealing to 'leave no trace' nature enthusiasts. Sand beach, good fishing, hiking, canoing, birdwatching, stargazing. Birds! Good berry and mushroom picking in season. Rock climbing, biking, etc. The property is situated adjacent to the 125 km loop of the multi-purpose recreational trail (also known as the 'snowmobile trail'). Wildlife watching possibilities are every day, larger animals are more likely to be seen in spring and fall. The campground covers 6 acres and has only 40 sites. Most sites are treed on 2 sides, and half have a view of the water.
The log cabins were built in 1947 when the area was flooded to create a reservoir for electricity generation at Arnprior. Originally a homesteaded farm, the property became known internationally, first as a hunting/fishing destination, later as a family trailer park with beachside '2 bedroom cottages' (at 14' X 14' and 16' X 16' the buildings are the same size as the originals, just organized differently). The cabins have been rebuilt and updated in the last 10 years. The driveway leading to the cabins is part of the historic Opeongo Settlement Road. Low density accommodation provides for more escape from city life. All nature activities are self directed. Campsites are groomed and have sturdy picnic tables. Each has its own firepit, except for group sites, which have one firepit to share. This is a walkaround premises. Driving vehicles around the park is discouraged unless you have a mobility consideration.

Central washrooms with showers and flush toilets. Canoe and rowboat rentals are available, daily or weekly. Firewood is available on site $10/wheelbarrow. The water comes from a well, and tests perfect (0/0); please, do not bring bottled water, as there are no recycling facilities in this community for the plastic bottles. A clean sand beach stretches along the west side of the grounds (a no fishing area, but the rest of the 85 km of shoreline is fishable), bordering on Moore's Creek, which flows into the Madawaska River. Moore's Falls is 1 km upstream. There are open play areas throughout the grounds. Group campsites are available for tenting. This is a great base camp for nature enthusiasts of all kinds. We now have camper washup stations outdoors.
